Blizzard’s World of Warcraft inspired card game, Hearthstone, will release it’s next expansion set: Whispers of the Old Gods. Judging from the artwork and name, it appears to be heavily inspired by the works of horror novelist H.P. Lovecraft; best known in today’s pop culture as the creator of Cthulu.
It was uncertain how far ahead the release date was until Blizzard told the world over the weekend that it’s just a few days away, much to many people’s surprise.
Along with new cards, the game will also feature the introduction of a new game mode. Hearthstone as we came to know it will be under the “Wild” mode, which allows all cards. Alternately, there will now be a “Standard” mode available. This is taking a note from the Magic: The Gathering style of tournament play, which dictates what cards can be used. In Hearthstones case, it will limit what expansions are allowed. This has been rather controversial however; though unsurprising as is the case of ‘you can’t please everybody’.
As usual, individual card packs can be bought with real money or in-game gold earned through wins and bounties. There is also a “pre-purchase” deal on right now where players can buy 50 packs for $49.99 (usually only 40 packs at that price).
