Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 has quickly become a major contender since it’s release with the game out now on PC and coming very soon to PS5. It was sad to hear that Xbox owners would likely miss out on the Dungeons and Dragons RPG until next year thanks to some technical limitations but it seems that the wait won’t be as long as we thought.
Larian Studios creative director Swen Vincke confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that after talks with Phil Spencer at Gamescom that they were able to “find a solution to allows us to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox Players, something we’ve been working towards for quite some time.”
That solution, the weaker Xbox Series S will be missing the split-screen co-op feature. “All improvements will be there, with split-screen coop on Series X. Series S will not feature split-screen coop, but will also include cross-save progression between Steam and Xbox Series.”
A few weeks ago, director of publishing at Larian, Michael Douse, had confirmed that the technical limitations and not platform exclusivity deals were holding up the Xbox release. “We’ve said many times in the past that the issue is getting split-screen working on the Series S, which is taking more time, but is in progress,” Douse said at the time. “This is a huge technical hurdle, but we are unable to release the game on the ecosystem without this feature.”
After affirming that Baldur’s Gate 3 will be coming to Xbox later this year, Microsoft’s Social Media account advised that they will “continue to work with Larian to explore the addition of split-screen on the Series S post launch.”
