The Department of Homeland Security’s United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, has sent out an emergency notice to all Microsoft Windows users to uninstall Apple’s QuickTime program due to severe security flaws. (These flaws are so bad they’re significantly worse than infamous Adobe Flash.)
According to Internet and cloud-storage security company Trend Micro, QuickTime can easily be infected by any site using QuickTime media; and Apple has no plans to fix the problems. This isn’t surprising considering their notoriety for ignoring security flaws until they’re a major (or publicized) threat on their own systems; so it’s less likely they’d bother with a competing OS as is this case.
Those using QuickTime on Macs shouldn’t have much to worry as the program is being phased out anyway by Apple.
