History has repeated itself as the hit Japanese Children’s Anime based on the game from Level-5, Yo-Kai Watch, has beaten out the biggest movie to hit theatres at the moment, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on its opening weekend
The report comes from our good friends at Crunchyroll, who reported that “Yo-Kai Watch The Movie: The Great Adventure of the Flying Whale and the Double World” had sold 608,033,100 yen worth of tickets ($5.189 million USD). While Rogue One did earn more in revenue due to the higher ticket price, Japanese rankings go by how many tickets were sold.
Level-5’s Yo-Kai Watch series has been insanely popular in Japan, with the Second Yo-Kai Watch movie beating out Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year, earning around $47 million USD, and beating the latest Pokemon movie which earned $20 million USD.
In North America, the first Yo-Kai watch movie was brought over and aired on Disney XD and is currently streaming on Netflix. The series has seen some traction in North America but the craze has yet to really catch on over here.
