I love cats. And being told there is a classic style J-RPG about cats going on adventures… I said sign me up!!
Two hours in and I am pleasantly reminded of the great classic RPG’s. This game is in the classic Final Fantasy style of the early 90’s. Beautifully done with tonnes of story to keep you entertained.
The story was written by Ilona Myszkowska, aka Snailish, who is a famous Polish author. They created an in-depth history for the game world and interesting back stories for the main characters.
The story revolves around Catair. Her family was killed by Orcats, thus sending her on the path of an assassin. The trauma from her childhood, a massacre of her entire village, comes up in the game a fair amount; from painful flashbacks to dark dialogue. It provides an interesting view into her character.
There are many different dialogues and story endings to encounter, this game is immense in story. Definitely need to play more than once to discover all of the dialogue and endings.
The world has a tonne of story regarding it’s history, religion and magic. Each stylized for cats. Floating balls of yarn, priests mewling at a giant bowl with a giant foot behind it and much more! Such an amusing history and mythos, even Cthulhu makes an appearance as Cathulu.
The graphics are simple in the over world, but in line with the Final Fantasy games previously mentioned. During dialogue, the artistry comes to the forefront. Characters are lovingly drawn and you can see this in their details. There are many unique stylized characters, a guard from Attack on Titan, Mewlan and even a Harry Potter cat. The over world is simple. Most of the houses are designed simple and similar to each other. There are also special buildings that have unique designs and backgrounds to them.
The combat is a turn based system consisting of attacks, special moves or magic, defense, items and character specific moves. It is basic, but on the whole, it feels good. Like the classic RPGs, you get equipment and one time use items. During my play through, I found a weapon for Catair that would do 0-6 damage. I was so confused when I could only pet an enemy and no damage was being dealt. At one point, I thought I was even healing them. Reading the flavour text on the weapon indicated that even though it raised your attack, it would not do a lot of damage. After that, I quickly switched out and the fights went much smoother. There are so many unique items to discover in the game.
The Claws of Very Pleasant Touch, great for the baddies, not so much for dealing damage…
Like the J-RPG’s of the past, the music is simple but catchy. It is very much in line with this adorable game.
Unique fury attack from Catair
Control of the game can be done via keyboard and mouse, mouse alone, or control pad. All are simple to use and ensure an easy time while playing. My preferred method was using the mouse alone. This allowed for optimal game playing while keeping my cats entertained.
Overall I enjoyed the game and recommend it.
