Hello my sweet sugarcubes!
It’s anime review time; and for my first GameItAll article, I’ve chosen to write about a little gem called Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt. It was released in October of 2010, so not really a new thing. This show is highly debated as to what it’s actually classified as. Is it a cartoon? Is it an anime? It is, dare I say, hentai? Well, in my opinion it’s a little bit of everything. Think Powerpuff Girls meets Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, with a heaping teaspoon dash of R rated fun. Now if you haven’t seen either Powderpuff or Hi Hi; then you have some Googling to do, my friend; have you been living under a rock? No excuses!
Before I get into the nitty gritty of this show, let’s keep in mind that it is offensive, gross, and just plain crass. If you have an ultra weak stomach, are easily butt-hurt, or are under the age of 18 (technically), I’d advise you to move right along. Now that we have a disclaimer of sorts out of the way, let’s jump into this review!
First let me tell you a little bit about the main characters. Panty and Stocking are basically disgraced angels who fight random and often disgusting monsters that have found their way to our beloved Earth. Whenever a monster is defeated, Panty and Stocking receive a medallion, collecting them as sort of a currency to earn their way back into heaven. Panty is a bubbly blonde bombshell in a perpetual state of arousal. She will basically screw anything that moves, and that is her main characteristic. When it’s time for battle, she removes her panties (thus the name) which turn into a totally badass gun for taking out the baddies. Stocking is on the opposite end of the spectrum; she is a melancholy gothic lolita who drastically prefers sweets and treats to men any day of the week. Her sugary addiction often gets her into some interesting situations. Stocking’s weapon is, of course, her stockings, which transform into katana type samurai swords when monsters appear. Last and certainly least is Garter Belt, a dark priest who is charged with the arduous task of keeping Panty and Stocking in line until they earn their way back into heaven.
The show itself is incredibly vulgar, full of profanity and perversion. In the first episode alone (spoiler alert!), Panty and Stocking’s nemesis is a giant stinky poo monster. Episode 1 is full of s**t, literally. PSG has elements of magical girls transformation animes as well as being an homage to Invader Zim, so you really can’t go wrong. The only downside in my opinion is that there aren’t more episodes, and that a few of the existing episodes feel like filler which doesn’t further the storyline at all. My only other complaint is that PSG is not a long running show time-wise, so a lot of action and zaniness gets stuffed into approximately 15 minutes, which can get a little confusing to follow at times. The background music is some bumping techno with Dance Dance Revolution-esque beats that will have you bobbing your head along for sure. If there is one thing you won’t have a problem with, it’s boredom.
I rarely say this, but I would advise watching Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt using the English dub rather than the Japanese w/sub. Unless you’re fluent in Japanese; you’re bound to miss a witty pun or two because the speed of dialogue is intense. Watching the subbed version means you’ll probably have to pause multiple times per episode just to be able to follow along. As for the English dub, it’s well done and grotesquely crude, which was the whole point of the show! Well done, you radical voice actors, you. Overall, I would recommend this anime to anyone who enjoys Adult Swim, South Park, or is a pubescent teenage boy. Sweet tunes, awesome fight scenes, fun animation style. PSG is a breath of fresh air from the usual moe moe kawaii type school girl animes and also from the hack and slash super serious Soul Eater types. A happy medium that doesn’t take itself too seriously; I’d put Panty And Stocking With Garterbelt on your must-watch list.
