Now I know shooting games are cool (I do play my fair share) but today I want to talk about Racing games. As a racing fan myself (since 1992) I have played racing games starting in the old days of arcades, I remember it being RoadBlasters – Atari – 1987 at a local shopping mail. I put in the quarter and started to play and I was hooked. For the rest of my gaming life I have seen some great games “RCA Pro Am”,”Outrun”,”Pole Position”,Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s Super Off Road and my two favorite “Virtua racer” and “Hard Drivin” these were the “Big 2” in my mind for different reasons.
Virtua racer-Created by Sega-AM2 and was intruduced in October 1992 and much like “Hard Drivin” they used polygonal characters, now with Virtua you had the shifters behind the wheel. The small flippers or paddles were of the same style that is currently in use by Indycar and Formula One.
Hard Drivin created by Atari Games was released in 1989 its was the first 3D polygon driving game. The machine it self was the famous half car, the seat was a “bucket seat” seat would move like a real car seat. The best part of this machine was the pedals , the real to life “Gas”,”Break” and “Clutch” and the shifter was a classic “H” pattern shifter. Now at the time for a person who had only driven automatic transmission the clutch and shift cost me my far share of quarter (like $50 worth) but after some time it all came together and I was not too bad .
