The first title in Until Dawn Developers Supermassive Games’ anthology horror games – The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, has received an official release date. The supernatural horror story will be available on August 30th for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Revealed at Gamescom 2018, The Dark Pictures Anthology will be a series of horror games set in the similar style of Until Dawn, which includes different paths that can likely kill off main characters, however each story will be separate stories with new characters. Man of Medan will be the first entry in this series which features a mysterious haunted ghost ship and those who were stupid brave enough to explore it.
Pre-ordering the game will gain you immediate access to the “Curator’s Cut”, which will open up new paths, a new perspective from unlocked characters, new choices within each scene, and new scenes and secrets. Publishers Bandai Namco has confirmed that this content will be made available to all at an unspecified date if you choose to not pick up the game immediately.
Until Dawn was well received by critics (read our review here) and despite the spin-offs which included two VR titles – Supermassive decided not to do a direct sequel. According to Supermassive CEO and executive producer Pete Samuels, “A lot of [creating the anthology] is about our desire to serve that Until Dawn fanbase from our perspective and to serve us ourselves in what we love to do, which is do more stories and characters, and do it more frequently than one or two every few years.”
Game director Tom Heaton also mentioned about how a sequel could put restrictions on storytelling and character interactions, saying “You’re not tied to historical characters that you have to use.” Which Producer Dan McDonald followed: “If we were making sequels, we don’t know who survived. I mean we could probably work it out from your game save, but we don’t want to make a sequel to that. We want to make a different story with different people.”
