November 10th was a brutal day for most of our wallets, with the release of Fallout 4, Starcraft 2: Legacy of the void and Rise of the Tomb Raider, the Xbox One/360 exclusive sequel to the extremely popular Tomb Raider Remake from Square Enix.
With that many games you’d expect to see that one of those titles to take a hit in sales, after all it releasing one the same day as two other major titles, also following major releases which includes Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Star Wars Battlefront. Being the only exclusive out of the list, the easy guess is that Lara Croft’s latest adventure may have suffered at release.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case, with an interview with DualShockers, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg said that game had “done well” despite the competition.
“It launched in a very crowded window,” he said, “but it has done well. A lot of people bought both Fallout 4 and Tomb Raider. At the same time we know a lot of people may have bought Tomb Raider and wait on Fallout or bought Fallout and waited on Tomb Raider.”
“We expect it will be a title that will continue to sell through the Holidays, whereas we have so many games releasing week after week, so we expect that people will come back. They didn’t buy one of these titles and there’s still a lot of great titles, Halo 5, Star Wars Battlefront, Call of Duty, Fallout 4… There are so many great games in such a short window, that we think that people will continue to buy these titles through Holiday and into next year.”
The end of 2015 was definitely crowded with many gamers having to pick and choose which games they were going to purchase, especially in Canada where games can cost up to $80 plus tax thanks to a weak dollar. Still, Rise of the Tomb Raider had released to great reviews praising the further evolution of the new Lara Croft that we fell in love with in the Tomb Raider Remake. The game will also get a second chance to impress as Square Enix plans to release the game on PS4 and PC sometime next year.
Rise of the Tomb Raider also received nods from The Game Awards this year, and we even nominated it for our Microsoft game of the year and best performance from Camilla Luddington as Lara Croft for our Game of the Year awards, which we will announce the winners soon.
