It’s generally agreed that 2016 was pretty crappy, but despite that we have had, what I believe, one of the strongest year in gaming in recent history. We’ve seen so many great games that our list for Game of the Year was actually difficult to have everyone agree on a winner.
With the variety of the 5 titles we narrowed down to, it’s easy to see why. We had Naughty Dog’s swan song to their beloved Uncharted series, Bethesda injecting new life into DOOM with a bloody throwback to classic shooters, Blizzard taking a chance on a multiplayer competitive shooter (and being extremely successful at it), Final Fantasy XV releasing after 10 years with a mess of a development cycle and still being amazing, and Respawn showing off some amazing skills with a solid campaign with amazing level design and a great multiplayer in Titanfall 2.
As much as we loved all of these games this year, we can only award one. THIS IS OUR GAME OF THE YEAR:
AND THE NOMINEES ARE…
TITANFALL 2 (Respawn)
FINAL FANTASY XV (Square Enix)
OVERWATCH (Blizzard)
UNCHARTED 4 (Naughty Dog)
DOOM (Bethesda/ID)
AND THE WINNER IS….
FINAL FANTASY XV
“A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” This famous line from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has never been more true then for Final Fantasy XV. 10 years in development and originally planned to launch as Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The game had undergone a bunch of different development troubles until it was finally announced as Final Fantasy XV and released to us on November 29th 2016.
Final Fantasy XV opens with a message dedicated for fans and newcomers to the series, and this is exactly what is great with XV. The game takes elements from previous Final Fantasy games which fans know and love, and throws in a new epic story with a responsive action-based combat system and a beautifully unique world to explore.
