While the series outside of Japan has been known as Yakuza, it seems with the success of the 7th game in the series, the franchise is rebranding to fall more in line with it’s original Japanese title – Like A Dragon.
With the new rebranding also comes the announcement of three new games in the Like a Dragon series, a direct sequel, a prequel/side-story, and a spin-off title that until now was exclusive to Japan.
The first was announced during a Sony State of Play, Like A Dragon: Ishin! – a game that was released in 2014 and never released in the west, which also featured characters from Yakuza 1-5 with a Samurai era twist. The new head of RGG Studio, Masayoshi Yokoyama said in a livestream that the new version of Like A Dragon: Ishin! will feature some changes to some of the characters and will include characters from Yakuza 0, 6, and 7 to ensure an “all-star cast.”
Next up is a new action-adventure title, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. This brings Kazuma Kiryu back into the spotlight and seems to be taking place sometime after the events of Yakuza 6. According to Yokoyama, the game will be “about half the size” of a mainline title in the series, but won’t be completely linear, as players will still be able to hang around town and do side quests, adding that it will be “easy to play, not too long, not too heavy.”
The final game announced was the direct sequel, Like a Dragon 8, which saw Yakuza 7 protagonist Ichiban Kasuga teaming up with an older Kazuma Kiryu. Details about this game was light, however Yokyama did confirm that Like a Dragon 8 will bring back the role-paying gameplay from Yakuza 7, explaining that this decision was motivated by the story; with both games being based around working with friends and the system seemed to work best.
Like a Dragon: Ishin! will be released on February 21st, 2023, with Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name releasing later that year, and Like A Dragon 8 in 2024. All of the games will be coming to PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
