Here is an interesting story about Kristoffer Von Hassel, a 5 year old boy from San Diego who had found a way to access Xbox Live profiles without the need of a password, and handed his finding over to Microsoft to improve the security of the Xbox Live Platform.
News broke yesterday as a report from local ABC affiliate KGTV, that Kristoffer was able to access a Xbox Live profile with a simple trick of failing the log-in to the account the first time then replacing the password with spaces, which allowed him to sign into the profile. In fear of punishment, Kristoffer told his dad what had happened. Kristoffer’s father works in computer security and was very impressed, he contacted Microsoft about the findings.
In a statement following the Breach, Microsoft said “We’re always listening to our customers and thank them for bringing issues to our attention. We take security seriously at Xbox and fixed the issue as soon as we learned about it.” According to KGTV, Kristoffer received a year of Xbox Live Gold, 4 games, and his name on the list of security researchers for Xbox Live for his help with the breach.
