If you were a wrestling fan during the 90’s then the name Stone Cold Steve Austin should bring back memories of bad attitude, beer, flipping off your boss and and breaking glass. 2K has announced yesterday that Steve Austin will be the cover star for the upcoming WWE 2K16 and will be featured in part of the game’s campaign mode.
When speaking with MTV UK, Stone Cold stated that he was “very honoured to be the cover star.” Adding “Being asked got me thinking, and I guess I kind of started looking back at all the things I managed to accomplish in the business. But I think it was testament to a very deep locker room in one the best eras in the business. All these years later, it is very special and I’m very proud and I was very happy to get the phone call to be the cover star of such a highly regarded video games franchise.”
During a Press Release statement, he brought back a bit of the attitude that made the wrestler extremely popular in the WWE. “No disrespect to the previous and extremely deserving WWE 2K cover Superstars–Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and John Cena–but it’s about time the franchise raised some hell with yours truly on the cover. I look forward to injecting a dose of ‘Texas Rattlesnake’ into this year’s game and overall campaign.”
Stone Cold has not wrestled in almost a decade now, however still remains a fan favourite and hosts two successful weekly podcasts. Even WWE owner Vince McMahon has said that Austin was the undisputed most popular wrestler in the history of that organization.
On top of this announcement, 2K has also stated that WWE 2K16 will also have the biggest roster of wrestlers ever in the series, boasting 120 different characters. The game is set to “raise some hell” on October 27th on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One
