Knights of Pen and Paper is a strategy based pixel game, in which you and your friends take the role of Dungeon Crawlers while the computer plays your Dungeon Master. You are essentially playing the game exactly in the title, a pen and paper RPG in art form, and honestly? It create an amazing third wall dynamic that I really appreciated.
Knights of Pen and Paper transports the player into a text based graphic game. That may be a mouthful, but does not make it any less true! You are basically playing the old dos based games of old, using a more advanced system, and a mouse instead of typing “pick up sword” your are just clicking on the sword. While the base game is VERY basic, it somehow manages to stay relevant and fun.
As the game starts, you have to choose your first two party members. There are clerics, warriors, druids, etc, all based on the old classes you’d be used to seeing in an actual pen and paper RPG, so it gives the amazing flavor of an old style gaming session with your buddies. Once you pick your starting party, you venture out into the world to complete quests, battle monsters, and in the end, become warriors of legend.
That all comes after the ridiculously long grind. So my biggest complaint about this game is the amount of time it takes to actually do anything. You just grind for hours upon hours trying to gain gold so you can further grind for more hours. Don’t get me wrong, the game play itself is basic but enticing, and it is well enough to keep you entertained for short bursts, but not something you want to sit there and play for six to eight hours straight.
Now, this game does do a lot of additional things besides the main story to keep you busy though, and that is the crazy amount of world and character customization. So there is several different classes, but also several different races such as the Jock, Nerd, Little Brother, etc, which have to be chosen and will give benefits depending on which one is.
You have to buy table and room decorations to bump the game up even further. This unlocks the ability to have five party members instead of three, and fight up to seven monsters at once instead of five, to name a couple of them. It also changes the overall aesthetic of the game itself, which gives me a deeper immersion.
This is a good game if you are looking for an easy, fun, and overall time waste of a game. If you are looking for a game with depth, a great story, or the shiniest graphics, you may want to start by looking elsewhere. Either way, I will keep on playing this one, and can not wait to play Knights of Pen and Paper 2.
