EXP is a upcoming video game bar and restaurant, a one of a kind thing in Canada, that allows people to come in and play video games while drinking. There are a couple of really cool features that they’re hoping to implement such as giant launch parties, tournaments, membership rewards which allows you to literally level up, all while enjoying custom made drinks based off of games, and some excellent food.
Of course, something this awesome can have some drawbacks, as EXP is having issues with the British Columbia Liquor laws, which prohibit “the use of gaming consoles within the areas outlined” for their business. The main reason stated for this law is that it would detract from the service of food.
The owners have challenged this statement, insisting that this is not so different from watching a sporting event. So the question being is why is BC against video games being played in a bar?
Sadly, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting an answer anytime soon as the British Columbia board gave them back a copy and paste letter, stating what they already said before.
EXP founders, Brian Vidovic (a former game designer of Radical Entertainment) and Julianna Kolakis (a digital artist for District 9), began a petition in response against the law that is holding this awesome concept back. If this fails, EXP cannot allow customers to play video games during their bar experience. Despite theses setbacks, EXP still plans to open during the summer.
Honestly, as gamers, we really want to see this project kick off.
