Back when CD Projekt Red announced that they’d be making a free-to-play game based on the popular card mini-game found in Witcher 3, the team had some aspirations of including a Single-Player campaign to the game. However according to CD Projekt Red Co-founder Marcin Iwinski, the idea of a single player Gwent game quickly became a different beast, which is now named Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
“What started as a single-player adventure for a multiplayer card game quickly outgrew the original concept and became a game in its own right.” Marcin said in a press release. Thronebreaker is a proper Witcher tale, with more than 30 hours of story, over 75 side quests, and — at the same time — a game that lets you lead an army into previously unexplored places in the Witcher universe. And all of this is powered by story-driven battles based on the card battle mechanics of GWENT.”
Thronebreaker tells a new story set in the Witcher world and follows Meve – a war-veteran Queen of Lyria and Rivia as she “sets out on a dark journey of destruction and revenge” while tensions rise between the Nilfgaardian Empire and the Northern Realms.
Pre-orders for Thronebreaker: the Witcher Tales are available now on PC exclusively through GOG, with the game releasing on October 23rd 2018, and is priced at $29.99USD or $38.99CAD. Pre-ordering the game will give you access to some great digital goodies including the Thronbreaker soundtrack, a digital version of GWENT: Art of the Witcher Card Game artbook from Dark Horse, concept art, The Witcher Graphic Novel “Fox Children” by Dark Horse, 2 in-game GWENT player titles and player avatars, as well as 5 premium kegs for Gwent.
However, it is important to note that these goodies are not just exclusive for pre-orders. “When buying our games, everyone gets the same in-game content. Doesn’t matter if you pre-order it or buy it after launch. We don’t want to lure you in with ‘exclusive item’ bullshit. For us, pre-orders are all about the anticipation and excitement, and — most importantly — showing support for the studios and games you love. So, if what you see and read in the previews appeals to you, we welcome your pre-order with open arms. However, if you need more time and would rather wait for reviews, do take your time and buy post-launch — you won’t miss out on any of the goodies,” Marcin said.
Thronebreaker will also be coming to PS4 and Xbox One in December, you can check out the trailer for the game above and go to the game’s official website – witchertales.com – to take a peek at some of the characters you’ll meet in the game.
