THQ Nordic has been a surprising powerhouse as the publisher has evolved from a small time player to purchasing most of the original library of the previous THQ and delivering some new and classic titles. One of its more recent acquirement includes Koch Media, better known as Deep Silver, who had IP’s such as Dead Island and the Saints Row series. The publisher also grabbed some fan favourite series as well including the Timesplitters last August.
While we haven’t heard much of an update on these franchises since they were acquired, during a financial report for April-June 2019; the publisher touched on some updates for on some of the titles in development including the recent announcement of Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom remake, Destroy All Humans!, and Darksiders Genesis at E3.
While the announcements didn’t include any planned release dates or how far along the development was in the games, it does at least reassure us that they are in development.
The first that was announced was Dead Island 2, which had some troubled development already as it had hopped developers from Spec Ops: The Line developers – Yager, to Sumo Digital. The financial report mentioned that the development has moved once again, this time to THQ Nordic’s internal development at Dambuster Studios – the studio that was previously behind Homefront: The Revolution. It was not said how far this game is into development however it is likely going to move to a Next Gen title as the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett release looms.
The next was confirmation that Volition is deep in development on a new Saints Row title, which will be the first full-entry of the popular open world game since 2013’s Saints Row IV. The Saints have had some time with spin-offs since then with “Gat out of Hell” and “Agents of Mayhem”, but it’ll be interesting to see how the series is going to evolve after its last entry where you became the President of the United States stuck in an alien simulation with superpowers.
Finally in regards to Timesplitters, we didn’t get much information other than they are looking to the future with the franchise and to help with that, series co-creator – Steve Ellis, has join the team. This is a good sign for Timesplitters fans as it shows THQ Nordic’s commitment to franchise.
The publisher will be at Gamescom next week, promising to show off new information for the upcoming Destroy All Humans! remake, Darksiders Genesis, Biomutant, Desperadoes III, and SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, as well as an unannounced game. We’ll keep you updated on these titles as we get more information.
