One of the best FPS series on the PS2 to hit the PS2 is making a comeback thanks to THQ Nordic as they have announced that they have acquired the rights to the franchise from Crytek. THQ Nordic is assigning the series under its subsidiary company, Deep Silver, which the company brought early in the year.
“We are hugely excited to have acquired Timesplitters,” Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of THQ Nordic’s Koch Media, in an official statement. “The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the Timesplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill todays gaming audience.”
The company had also acquired the rights to another game from the same team behind the Timesplitters franchise, Second Sight, a Sci-fi action game where players take control of a man with powerful psychic abilities out to uncover their past and involvement in a top secret mission.
Timesplitters and Second Sight were originally developed by Free Radical Design, which was started by team members who previously worked on Rare’s N64 Shooters GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. The Timesplitters series reflected this a lot and was well received during their releases between 2000 and 2005, thanks to its entertaining single-player campaign and a great multiplayer mode. A fourth game was announced however after the PS3 exclusive HAZE (*The PS3’s answer to Halo for those who remember the hype behind it at the time) The studio failed fo find a willing publisher and was then picked up by Crytek, who put the team to work on Crysis 2 and 3 as Crytek UK.
Plans for the franchises are underway however it is too early to know what exactly we’ll be getting, however the fate of a fan project that has been in the works for a while now is currently up in the air, Timesplitters Rewind, a remake of Timesplitters that was given Crytek’s blessing, it is currently unknown if THQ Nordic will allow the team to continue.
