Late last week, THQ Nordic announced that they have acquired Koch Media, the parent company of Deep Silver, in a deal that was worth $149 million US. As part of the acquisition, THQ Nordic now owns the Saints Row, Homefront, Dead Island, Metro series and more.
This is an interesting development because this means that almost all the properties held by the old THQ before it filed for bankruptcy in 2012 is now owned by the new THQ.
In case you don’t remember the great selling of THQ in 2012, here is a quick recap. In December 2012, THQ filed for bankruptcy and was set to auction off its studios and IPs to multiple companies in early 2013. From the auction, Koch Media picked up Saints Row developer Volition and the Metro property – They would publisher Saints Row 4 and its spin-off Agents of Mayhem, as well as Metro Last Light and the Metro Redux remakes. Meanwhile Crytek picks up Homefront, but later sells it to Koch Media who published Homefront: The Revolution. Meanwhile, Nordic Games buys a substantial amount of properties from THQ including Darksiders, Red Faction and the MX series, later acquiring the THQ trademark and changing their name to THQ Nordic.
With the two companies combined, the publisher has 50 game projects in development with 17 of them officially announced as of Dec. 31st 2017. According to a press release, Koch Media will operate as a separate entity under THQ Nordic. THQ Nordic also stated that there will be no restructuring or cost-saving programs to be put in place, suggesting that there will be no layoffs in the acquisition, and that “names of both operational companies, including its publishing units Deep Silver and THQ Nordic, will remain unchanged.”
