While The Sims may not be the most kid friendly of games, the ESRB in North America have always been rated “T” for Comic Mischief, Mature Sexual Themes, and Mild Animated Violence. The European PEGI system has rated the games as PEGI 12+ for similar reasons. The “life simulator” games have never crossed that threshold at any point in development between the 3 iteration plus it’s countless DLC packs, that is until now when the Russian Ratings board gave the upcoming Sims 4 an 18+ rating in accordance with Russian law 436-FZ, “On Protection of Children from Information Harmful to Their Health and Development.”
While it wasn’t stated what in the game has cause it to violate this law which penalizes information “encouraging children to commit acts that endanger their lives,” information that would instill a “desire to use narcotics, psychotropic and (or) intoxicants, tobacco, alcohol and alcohol-containing products, justifying illegal behaviour, contains pornographic imagery” and information that promotes “unconventional sexual relationships,” among a lengthy list of other offences.
While the game’s PEGI and ESRB ratings are yet to be announced, we can only assume that the rating of the game will be vastly different for everyone else.
