It seems that last years VGX was the final nail in the coffin for Spike TV’s run at televising the a Video Game awards show. While it is sad that the 10 year running awards show is no longer running, we will not be without a game of the year award show this year as VGA/VGX Executive producer Geoff Keighley will be taking over the show.
The Game Awards will be livestreamed on various outlets starting at 9 p.m. ET on Dec. 5 from the Planet Hollywood’s AXIS Theater in Las Vegas. Geoff Keighley will be serving as Producer, which in an interview with Polygon he had stated that he is paying for the show out of his own pocket.
“The investment is my own,” he told Polygon. “I’m bankrolling it and we’re trying to sell some sponsorships. But there are no submission fees.
“I thought about doing a Kickstarter, but I would feel awkward doing that. I think I need to take this on myself to prove I can do it. I need to prove to everyone this is going to be great. If I were to Kickstart it there would have been a fair amount of skepticism.
“Maybe in future years there is a model like that, but the way people can support it this year is by tuning in, coming out to Vegas, telling their friends about it.”
The Game Awards will feature announcements of new games as well, including gameplay for the upcoming Metal Gear Online, however Keighley noted that the show will be focused as a celebration of the industry.
The Nominees have been listed below, while no game was nominated more than three times, several games are tied for the most awards including South Park: Stick of Truth, Dark Souls 2, Hearthstone and Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor. Nintendo is the leader for most awards for a publisher, leading the charge at 12 awards. The show will also feature new awards involving eSports, and a new category called Games for Change which feature a message or change outside of what is considered the gaming norm.
