On the Podcast this week we talked about how the upcoming X-Com related shooter which was announced before the remake of Enemy Unknown, the winner of last years RPG of the Year, was pulled from 2K’s sites sparking rumors of it’s cancellation. This does not seem to be the case as the game now had a drastic overhaul of it’s gameplay elements and has been reborn as The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.
The Bureau will be a Third Person Tatical Shooter set in 1962 during the the Kennedy administration and is the origin story of the modern XCOM initiative. Players will play as Special Agent William Carter, who can take in customized agents to the field to fight off the Aliens. Combat will be set in Real time rather then the turn-based battles that Enemy Unknown was praised for, however the squadmates will still have Permadeath active. 2K Games mentioned that they are focusing on keeping the X-COM games on the “tools, tactics and teams.”
As of the story for the game VP of 2K Games Product Development Alyssa Finley said the following:
“The Bureau’s initial charter was to investigate a series of incidents that the government thought were all Soviet infiltration and maybe a precursor to a nuclear war. Turns out, those incidents were of a far more extraterrestrial origin”
“The Bureau has to quickly adapt from their original charter to become the kind of organization that could identify alien threats, find ways to turn the alien technology against them and cover up evidence of what happened so that the American public could go on with their lives and not go into a panic about being invaded by aliens.”
The Bureau is currently set for a August 23th release date for PS3, PC and Xbox 360
