At EVO 2019 this weekend, Bandai Namco confirmed more fighters were on their way via Season 3 of Tekken 7, and while one of them was a returning fighter to the King of the Iron Fist tournament, we also got the first look to a brand new original character to Tekken.
The first reveil was the return of Tekken 6’s Zafina. Zafina belongs to a group of spiritual warriors who possesses great spiritual abilities and is the guardian of the tomb of Tekken 6’s antagonist Azazel. In Tekken 7, we see that she’s gained Azazel’s Orb and has the ability to summon part of his power, but it seems to taken a toll on her mentality. Her fighting style is an original one referred to as “Ancient Assassination Arts” in which director Katsuhiro Harada likened to a spider.
Then we were introduced to Leroy Smith, Tekken 7’s newest original fighter. Described as a “seasoned master of martial arts” who lost his family in a gang conflict 50 years ago. Unlike Zafina, Leroy uses the very real Wing Chun fighting style, focusing with rapid fire punches, powerful close range strikes and a cool “one-inch punch” attack. Wing Chun is a brutal fighting style for Tekken and I personally cannot wait to see what Leroy brings to the table.
Zafina is set to release in September 2019 along side the start of Season 3, with Leroy to follow before the end of 2019. Two more characters are set to release in 2020, along with a new feature, new stage, and new moves for all characters in Tekken 7.
