When Konami was teasing the return of a beloved franchise, a lot of fingers were pointing at a remake/remaster or a new entry in the Castlevania or Silent Hill franchise. The reveal at the Tokyo Game Show however, was actually much more surprising as Konami announced the return of their classic RPG Suikoden with a HD Remaster of the first two games.
“Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars” is set to launch in 2023 on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch, and will feature new lighting and atmospheric effects, shadow animations, updated character portraits redrawn by the original artist Junko Kawano. The collection will also see some quality of life features including auto-battles and fast forwards, as well as improved sound and updated translation.
Originally released on Playstation in 1995, Suikoden was well received and spawned several sequels and spin-offs with the last game being released on PSP in 2012 but never made it to the west. The series was unique for having a large amount of playable or recruitable characters, with some titles ranging over 100 allied team members.
