After 24 years on hiatus (not including the multiple re-releases on Xbox Live, PSN and various collection titles) a new Streets of Rage title has been officially announced. The project is from Dotemu and Lizardcube, who were the publisher and developers of last year’s Wonder Boy: the Dragon’s Trap, with partnership with Sega.
Streets of Rage 4 will be a direct follow up to the 1994 Genesis release Streets of Rage 3, and will bring back series mainstays Axel and Blaze in “an entirely original arcade-style romp” and will feature classic Beat’em up gameplay with new fighting mechanics, an original story, and hand-drawn visuals from the team behind Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap.
The Streets of Rage series started on the Genesis in 1991 and released 3 titles between then in 1994. There were a few attempts to bring the series back with Core Designs Fighting Force, which originally had the Streets of Rage name attached while the game was being developed for Sega Saturn, but due to disagreements with porting the game to other platforms the title was removed and Sega dropped from the publishing.
No release date or platform has been announced for Streets of Rage 4 yet, however the first trailer which highlights some of the new animations has been released (above) and it looks great.
