EA and Bioware announced today at that their hit MMO Star Wars the Old Republic will be moving to a hybrid Free-2-Play system in which new players will be able to pick up the game up to level 50 and all 8 classes with some restrictions to the gameplay. Bioware did state that those restrictions can be removed with micro transactions.
For those of you happily paying for the MMO, SWTOR will still be available in the standard subscription model where subscribers will be given special upgrades and an allowance of store currency called “cartel coins” which will give you extra gear and other niceties. People who Subscribed before the game moves to the new model will be given special rewards.
Biowares GM Matthew Bromberg stated that this is the next logical step in the game as “Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old Republic universe.” EA also mentioned at their investors call today that the game had dropped below a million subscribers but is still well above the half million point, with 40% of the people leaving saying it was due to subscriptions.
