Square Enix dropped some surprising news before E3 with the announcement of Star Ocean: First Departure R, a remake of the Playstation Portable game that released in 2008, which itself was a remake of the original Star Ocean game on the Super Nintendo in 1996.
Created by Tri-Ace and published by Square Enix (then known as Enix), the first Star Ocean game on the Super Nintendo was never released outside of Japan due to the console being 7 years old and Nintendo wanting to focus on the Nintendo 64. It was noteworthy for have active-timed battles and requiring a special hardware in its cartridge so the console could handle it due to the visuals being so advanced for its time.
The series spawned 4 more games including the critically praise Star Ocean: The Second Story and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. The most recent Star Ocean to be released was 2016’s Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness on PS3 and PS4, while 2009’s Star Ocean: The Last Hope was remastered in 2017.
Square Enix only announced that the project was happening however they did not confirm a release date or if it will be a physical launch or digital marketplace. Square Enix will be at E3 this year with their own press conference so it is likely we’ll be hearing more about it, and other titles like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, during the show.
