Earlier this week, Square Enix announced that two of their biggest titles for 2020, the Final Fantasy VII remake and Crystal Dynamic’s The Avengers game. In the cases for both games, the development teams agreed that they needed more time to polish up the games to meet the standards they required for the games.
In the case of Final Fantasy VII remake, originally set to launch on March 3rd, the game will now be pushed back to April 10, 2020. The new release date and explanation came from Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase on the company’s official blog:
“We know that so many of you are looking forward to the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and have been waiting patiently to experience what we have been working on,” Kitase said. “In order to ensure we deliver a game that is in-line with our vision, and the quality that our fans who have been waiting for deserve, we have decided to move the release date to April 10, 2020.”
“We are making this tough decision in order to give ourselves a few extra weeks to apply final polish to the game and to deliver you with the best possible experience,” Kitase continued. “I, on behalf of the whole team, want to apologize to everyone, as I know this means waiting for the game just a little bit longer.”
The highly anticipated remake was first showed off at Sony’s E3 2015 presentation, and at the time was being developed by CyberConnect2 who are best known for their work on the Naruto and .hack games. Since 2017, the development of the game has been moved in-house. Major changes have been done from the original to expand on the game with the story split into multiple parts, with part one focusing mainly in Midgar, and giving it more action-oriented gameplay (with the option to play with the classic turn-based gameplay.)
For Marvel’s The Avengers, it seems like there is a little more work needed, with the game moving from its May 15th release date to September 4th, 2020. Crystal Dynamics has announced the delay on the company blog as well, advising that it needs more time to bring together the studios vision of the game.
“We committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come,” the statement from Crystal Dynamics says. “To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine-tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.”
This delay doesn’t come to much surprise as the game has been met with a fair amount of criticism since the game’s reveal at E3 last year, particularly over the character designs which looked different from their cinematic universe counterparts and didn’t feel on par with expectations of how Marvel’s characters should appear. Criticism continued after a behind-the-door look at gameplay received a lukewarm reception.
There is also the matter of the game’s multiplayer mode, which is said to tie into the single-player campaign. Aside from unconfirmed leaked information, Marvel, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have been quiet on this aspect of the game. Hopefully, we’ll be given more info on what we can expect from the multiplayer aspect of the game with the release date pushed.
