The return to Souls and Swords is finally back! The long-awaited sequel to Bandai Namco’s weapon-based fighting series, Soulcaliber, was announced Thursday night at The Game Awards.
While we got little in the way of an announcement trailer at the Game Awards, the Playstation Experience gave us some more information about the title by announcing that Soulcaliber 6 will bring the series back to the beginning, which explains the young-looking Sophita and Mitsurugi duking it out in the trailer.
Bandai Namco confirmed that the game will fature a “diverse lineup of new and returning characters” while only confirming the two fighters seen in the debut trailer. They also confirmed that the game’s core 8-way run movement system, a mainstay since the original, will return along a new technique called Reversal Edge, allowing you to land a counter-attack while in guard.
The return to the original storyline is probably a well-needed reboot for the series which seemed to lost its way storyline-wise in Soulcaliber 5 by trading most of the characters we’ve come to love with the younger generation. Although it’s likely that we won’t see more recent fighters like Tira, Talim or Zalamel, it’s highly likely we’ll see other fan favourites like Ivy, Taki, Siegfried and Kilik due to their important role in the battle between Soulcaliber and Soul Edge.
The first Soulcaliber came to Arcades in 1998 and received the beloved Dreamcast port the following year. The last entry in the mainline series, Soulcaliber 5, released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, moving the story 17 years after the previous entry and focused on the children of the franchises best known fighters. Since then the Soulcaliber series lived on thanks to remastered editions of the original game and Soulcaliber 2, as well as a free to play version of Soulcaliber 5 called Soulcaliber: Lost Swords.
