Sony has a lot of high profile properties with the Playstation brand that could be perfect for film. After all if you look at Uncharted, The Last of Us, Infamous, Sly Cooper or even Ratchet and Clank, all of these under the right guidance could a great movie or TV series.
That is exactly what Sony believes too as evidence with a new production studio called PlayStation Productions. This will allow Sony to do films based on the Playstation brands without having to license them out and have more control over how the production will go.
“Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves,” PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash told The Hollywood Reporter. “One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the PlayStation community loves.”
“We looked at what Marvel has done in taking the world of comic books and making it into the biggest thing in the film world,” says Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden. “It would be a lofty goal to say we’re following in their footsteps, but certainly we’re taking inspiration from that.”
Surprisingly one of the first brands to get the treatment is Twisted Metal. The announcement came from Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra during a special presentation to investors, in which he confirmed that the game will be made to a TV series.
For those unfamiliar with the classic series, Twisted Metal was first released in 1995 for the original Playstation and saw several sequels before being rebooted 2012. The game focused on a demolition derby style tournament filled with a variety of psychopaths who put guns on their cars and attempt to blow each other up for a chance to receive a wish from a person who may or may not be the devil.
While the gameplay maybe a bit shallow for a TV series, 2001’s Twisted Metal Black and 2014’s Twisted Metal highlighted that the characters in the game’s world are much more deeper than just crazed Psychopaths, as we got to see deeper into the psyche of Mr.Grimm, Dollface and the series mascot/murderous clown – Sweet Tooth. A Twisted Metal series could potentially dive deeper into this world.
At any rate, it seems that Sony already has a backing from the creator of the Twisted Metal series, David Jaffe, who already offered to help with the show.
if they want my feedback, thoughts, help, and/or services I’m at their beck and call cause- as y’all know- I think the world of TM is super rich and I’d love to see more done with it besides straight up demo derby (altho that is tons of fun too!:)…

The project is still a long ways away, but could be an interesting start for Playstation Productions. What Playstation IP do you want to see done? Leave a comment below.
