During Sony’s Playstation Meeting event, the company officially announced two major projects that were long rumoured, The Playstation 4 Slim and the Playstation 4 Neo… I mean PS4Pro. While this is great for Sony, what does it mean for the 40 million Playstation Players and future adopter?
Let’s start with the PS4Slim, while Sony never officially called it by Slim, this is the first redesign of the PS4 since it’s launch in 2013. The Slim will be the new official model of the Playstation 4 moving forward and will feature all the same components as the current model only smaller. During the conference, Sony did not mention anything about any updates to the system or space, however they did announce a release date of September 15th 2016 and a $299 USD price tag.
The big highlight of the show was The PS4Pro, designed with the capability to run 4K and HDR (High Dynamic Range), and will also see an improved GPU and increased Clock Rates as well as a 1TB hard drive.
The more impressive thing was to actually see the PS4Pro in action, taking upcoming games like Insomniac’s Spider-Man, Days Gone, For Honor and Watch_Dogs 2, as well as already released titles like Shadows of Mordor, Infamous First Light, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided running with 4K and HDR active.
We also got some cool first looks at a new mission from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect Andromeda, all running on the PS4Pro. Videos to come as they are released to the public.
While the Pro is focused on 4K and HDR ready TVs, conventional HDTV’s won’t be left out of the dust. Sony confirmed that The Pro’s new rendering abilities will also update the game enough that HDTV owners will see a significant update when it comes to graphics on the Pro, the same will also be applied to the PSVR.
The Pro is set to release on November 10th 2016 for $399 USD. If you’re worried that you can’t afford the console, don’t worry, Sony stated that moving forward all titles will work on PS4 and PS4Pro in order not to split the community. Whether or not this stays true in the future or if we see a Pro exclusive title later down the line, remains to be seen.
