With Shenmue III in the works, Sega has announced that they’ll be re-releasing the original 2 titles in the series for PS4, Xbox One and PC later this year.
Originally released on the Dreamcast, Shenmue at the time was notorious for being one of the most expensive games to ever be made, however the title found a cult following and is now revered as one of gaming’s greatest series. Focusing on Ryo Hazuki as he sets out to avenge the death of his father and unravel the secrets behind a mysterious artefact known as the Dragon Mirror.
Sega has announced that the game will feature everything that has made Shenmue a classic, from “enthralling jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing and RPG Elements” as well as its “real-time open worlds which features its own day-to-night cycles and weather changes, with a population that follows their own schedules.”
The definitive version of these two classics will also come with some more modernised features including fully scalable screen resolution, choice of classic controls or a new reworked modern set-up, an update user interface and the option to enjoy the game with English or Japanese voiceover, no word on if any of the audio will be reworked for re-release at this time.
The Physical and digital editions will be available soon to pre-order, however no release date has been given at this time. Just know that we’ll at least be able to enjoy 2 classics before the third game in the series gets released.
