When we saw Shadow of the Colossus at the Sony E3 event a surprising thought went through my head. “Again?” I found it weird that I thought that because Shadow was a great game, one that I came back and beat multiple times on PS2 and when it was remastered on PS3. What was different about this version to get me to go back in and enjoy it again?
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida talked to Famitsu, (translated by Siliconera) about the upcoming game and has stated that the game will be a well needed upgrade. “It’s the same, but player preferences for controls and such change over time, so we’re working on implementing a more modernized way to play,” Yoshida stated. “And of course you can play with a feel of the original version, but what we’re doing is showing how great the original work is, using today’s technology.”
Recently jumping back into the game after a few years of not playing has made me realised that the controls for the title didn’t age well, so I definitely see where Yoshida was coming from with the statement. For good measure (and if we couldn’t tell already) Yoshida also confirmed that the game has been completely remade from the ground up by BluePoint Games.
“It is a remake,” Yoshida explained. “The game content is the same as the original version, but all the assets are being remade. I figured we could use such tech to make if we’re going to make Shadow of the Colossus in the PS4 era. Bluepoint is the development company behind the PS3 remaster versions of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. So we know them rather well.”
