Kotaku is reporting that 2K and Gearbox’s Battleborn will be going Free-to-play with the official announcement coming sometime in November. Their source “a person familiar with plans for the game”, sated that the game originally was supposed to be a Free-to-Play title but parent company 2K opted for a retail release.
Battleborn, Gearbox’s MOBA inspired Hero Shooter, was released the same month as Blizzard’s Overwatch, and despite great reviews and a large amount of hype (along with a story-mode, interesting characters, the ability to play single-player if you wanted) it couldn’t stand against the titan that is Blizzard.
However if the rumour is true, this could also be huge for Battleborn, previously another 2K released title, Evolved, moved to a free to play model and has done quite well according to reports. Battleborn could see a new life in the free-to-play market.
We’ll be waiting to see what happens with Battleborn, and as always, until we hear official confirmation from 2K or Gearbox, we will chalk this up to just being a rumour.
