Rumours have been circulating that Atlus, who had recently been purchased Sega, may be localizing Yakuza 5. The rumours started in the latest issue of EGM, which state on their rumour mill page in bold “don’t rule out Yakuza 5 coming out under the Atlus banner.”
While this is generally good news for fans of the series, it doesn’t come at much of a surprise, with Sega mentioning in the past that part of the dealings with the purchasing of the group would be that they could localize any title that they choose. With Yakuza 5 being a major choice with a rabid fanbase and being a game that got 40/40 by Famitsu.
Yakuza 5 is the series 4th entry on the PS3 and is the 2nd in the series not to get localized, the other being Yakuza: Kenzan, a spin-off that put the characters of the series in Edo Era Japan. After the critical and retail flop of Yakuza: Dead Souls, the zombie shooter spin-off, most hopes of Yakuza 5’s localization were dashed.
Sadly though this is still just a rumour and we are awaiting official word from Atlus.
