If you missed out on picking up Grand Theft Auto 4 on PC, at the time of this writing, it looks like you may be out of luck as Rockstar Games has pulled the game from sale due to a unique technical issue with the game.
While the product page is still up, customers can’t purchase the game due to Rockstar running out of product keys thanks to the demise of the Games for Windows Live platform. Rockstar sent the following statement to Polygon in regards to the issue.:
“Grand Theft Auto IV was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTAIV for PC and will share more information as soon as we can.”
Grand Theft Auto 4 originally released on the PC in December 2008 under the ill-fated Microsoft’s Games for Windows Live, which Microsoft abandoned support for in 2014 which lead many developers to update their games to remove the feature. Grand Theft Auto 4 so far has been the only game affected with the issue involving the inability to generate keys.
