In case you forgot that this is totally a thing coming, Legendary Pictures has announced the that Goosebumps and Monsters vs Aliens Director Rob Letterman would be helming the upcoming live-action Detective Pikachu movie which is set to start production in early 2017.
The Pokemon Spin-off movie will be loosely adapted from the game of the same name, which features a talking Pikachu who solves crime. The project also has Guardians of the Galaxy script writer Nicole Perlman and Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch set to write the film.
Legendary Pictures snatched the film rights to the property in July shortly after the Pokemon Go craze, with Universal set to distribute the movie outside of Japan, while The Pokemon Company’s longtime movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan.
Considering the success of Goosebumps (a film that we also didn’t think would be decent but turned out to be enjoyable) and Monsters vs Aliens, Rob seems to be the right choice for the project. We’ll have to wait and see what Legendary can pull for the upcoming kids flick.
