Square Enix announced today that the time-exclusive Xbox title “Rise of the Tomb Raider” will only be exclusive for the consoles for up to a year, with the press release stating that the game will reach PS4 some time “Holiday 2016” and “early 2016” for PC.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the Tomb Raider remake from Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics. Announced during last year’s E3 during Microsoft’s conference, it was then confirmed to be an Xbox Exclusive, much to dismay to fans who were upset as the title has been on Playstation since the early incarnations. Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher wrote in response to these outcries:
Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past – we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.
Square Enix announced shortly after that the game would be a Timed Exclusive, however until today did not give a time frame for the Exclusivity window. It is interesting enough that they announce this now as with most time exclusives, we would normally see this announcement after the release of the game.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is currently set for a Xbox One and Xbox 360 release on November 10th.
