Since the beginning of its time in Early Access, id Software and Bethesda has plans for their arena shooter Quake Champions to be free-to-play when the game leaves the program. While that time is not exactly now as the team is still adding some polish, improvements and new content like catpure the flag, none-the-less the game is now officially Free-to-Play.
Previously those who wanted to try the game would have to pick up the Starter or Champion pack to play the game, unless you got into the free-to-play promotions during E3. The starter pack is now being discontinued, however the Champion pack, which will give you access to all Champions current and future.
Those wondering what they get for “Free” is full access to the game and two automatically unlocked Champion characters – Ranger and Scalebearer. After completing the tutorial and earning favor by playing the game, you’ll be able to purchase champions and backpacks. Additionally, Champions can be purchased with Platinum, premium currency that cost real world money.
While most of the Champions are from the Quake universe, other id Software heroes such as the Doomslayer and B.j. Blazkowicz have also joined the fight. The various Champions in the game only do a little to actually change up the gameplay from our playtest, as some hero powers gives way to some unique strategies, but it hardly takes away from the fact that it is still Quake, a fast pace arena shooter.
If Bethesda and id continues to add guest characters from their other titles, can we hope for Commander Keen to make his long-awaited return to gaming?
