During last year’s E3, Microsoft announced a new revival/remake of a cult favourite title, Phantom Dust. The game was originally a card-based, action-strategy game designed by Yukio Futatsugi, who previously worked on Panzer Dragoon series on Saturn and Crimson Dragon for Xbox One. Early this year, we found out that the project was being handled by Darkside Game Studios, which shut down in February. It was because of that we weren’t expecting to hear from the title during E3, but the question still remained, what is going on with Phantom Dust?
According to Microsoft’s Marketing Lead for first and third party titles Aaron Greenberg in an interview with Gamertag Radio, the game is no longer in active development. However, the game itself is not cancelled.
“It’s been a passion project for [Xbox head Phil Spencer] and a lot of folks on the team,” Greenberg said. “We’re exploring what we’re going to do longer term with Phantom Dust. The project is not canceled. We don’t have an active developer on it right now but it’s a project that, like many things, will take a little more time. But at this point we’re not giving any more updates on it.”
So in other word, don’t expect to hear much about the title, and kind of take it like Microsoft’s “Last Guardian.”
