Last year, we nominated Persona 4 Arena for our Fighting game of the year, beating out big contenders like Skullgirls, DOA5 and Street Fighter X Tekken due to the well rounded story, great balancing and unique gameplay. While we anxiously wait for a sequel (or another version like Arc System Works is known for, seriously how many times have we played Guilty Gear X2 with different names,) the Japanese Arcade version of the praised fighting game is receiving a major update.
The Arcade-Only version of the game will be receiving 2 new characters in the form of Persona 3 favorites, Yukari Takeba and Junpei Iori. This brings the list of Playable Persona Users up to 15. The update also adds a new “Shadow Type” system, according to Shoryuken‘s translation of Famitsu‘s report. This will give players the option of replacing the game’s “Burst” mechanic with an alternate Shadow form, which grants temporarily unlimited special meter and enhanced attack properties. Also Shadow Type characters will bring their special meters with them to the next round. A new “S-Hold System” has been announced as well, which allows players to hold special attacks for enhanced abilities. Cancels can now be done into hops which will allow for better combo crafting and all of the existing cast will be given new moves and abilites
As awesome as this all sounds, unfortunately, there is no news on if this new updated version is coming to console in both North America or Japan. “It’s an arcade-only update,” Atlus’ John Hardin told us. “No plans to bring it to the U.S. at this time.” Hopefully this will change and we’ll see a new addition (possibly similar to numerous version of Street Fighter or Guilty Gear) to the series on console soon.
