It’s been almost a year since we last heard about Team Ninja’s Hard as Hell action game Nioh 2, and now not only do we get a glimpse at what we can expect in the upcoming sequel, we also know when we can test out the game in an Alpha state.
While most of the game looked very much like the original in terms of imagery and settings, the trailer showed off the new created characters (a feature we’ve known about for Nioh when it was first announced) as well as new weapons such as a nodachi-style blade, duel-wielded axes, a naginata and more. We also got a glimpse at some new Yokai that you’ll have to hunt through the game, and the ability to turn into a Yokai yourself.
The trailer indicated that we’ll also get a chance to test the game out in a Closed Alpha that will be held for a week between May 25th and June 2nd. The kicker is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to sign up to request an invite. According to a tweet from the official Team Ninja twitter account, “Some PS4 users are invited to take part in the Nioh 2 closed alpha to help gather feedback for the development.” They did not mention how they will be reaching out to the selected users, only that they have no plans to expand the test.
The original Nioh had several alpha and beta tests, both open and closed, prior to launch to ensure that the game’s online servers met their standards. Given the long delay of time to hear about Nioh 2 and with Sony backing out of E3 this year, it’s uncertain when we’ll hear more about the game at this time.
