Today is the day when we no longer get free multiplayer for games like Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as Nintendo will be activating the Nintendo Switch Online later today (at the time of this writing, the service is still down.)
Aside from the online play, there is some benefits to the service. The first being Cloud saving, which will allow you to save your latest data for certain games off of your Nintendo Switch and saving space on your memory card. So if your Switch stops working or breaks, you’ll be able to download them and continue where you where on a new Switch. We have learned of some drawbacks to this feature however, as Nintendo has announced that if the online service laps, save files will cease to exists.
The other plus side to this is the inclusion of the classic Nintendo library which will be available with the service. Nintendo has revealed the full line up of games available at launch with another 9 coming between now and December. The current library is as follows:
Balloon Fight
Donkey Kong
Dr Mario
Ice Climber
The Legend of Zelda
Mario Bros.
Soccer
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 3
Tennis
Ghosts ‘n Goblins
Excitebike
Tecmo Bowl
Yoshi
Double Dragon
Gradius
Ice Hockey
River City Ransom
Pro Wrestling
Baseball
In October, Solomon’s Key, NES Open tournament Golf, and Super Dodgeball will join the list, while November will see Metroid, Mighty Bomb Jack and TwinBee, while Ninja Gaiden, Adventures of Lolo and Wario’s Woods will hit in December. These games will also feature online multiplayer for the first time for both co-operative and competitive play.
The Online Service is also on the cheaper side in comparison to Playstation Plus and Xbox Live. With $3.99USD/4.99CDN for one month, $7.99USD/9.99CDN for 3 months and $19.99USD/24.99CDN for 12 months. A family membership will allow you to take up to 8 accounts online for a discounted price of $34.99USD/44.99CDN.
Nintendo is giving a 7-day free trial of the new service starting today, and has confirmed that players can pay for the service via the eShop using their Nintendo Rewards Points, vouchers from retailers or via credit card or paypal.
There is sadly alot of unknowns when it comes down to the Switch’s Online service so we will keep you posted on the new information that comes up as the service launches later today.
