During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, we finally got a look at the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie coming in 2023 with a short teaser that both delivered some excitement and underwhelmed at the same time.
The trailer kicked off with an extended scene of Jack Black’s Bowser leading an invasion against the penguin kingdom in search for a Power Star, followed by our first look at Mario played by Chris Pratt (sounding completely normal despite being an “updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before”) and a clip of Luigi running from some Dry Bones.
Aside from Jack Black (delivering a great Bowser) and Chris Pratt (as a Mario whose first impression has been… meh is about the only word I can put for it,) the film will also include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and the original voice of Mario – Charles Martinet. The movie will be made by Illumination Studios (Minions, Sing, Secret Life of Pets) and directed by Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!) and Aaron Horvath (Teen Titans Go! To the Movies).
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was originally slated for release some time this year, however a delay has moved the movie to a new date of April 7th, 2023.
