During Aniplex Online Fest 2022 livestream on Saturday, two teaser trailers were released for the upcoming Nier: Automata anime adaptation, including a release window of January 2023.
The teasers gave us some glimpse of 2B and 9S, the two android protagonists of Nier: Automata who serve under YoRHa, a military force on behalf of humanity to fight off alien robots. Both trailers also confirms that Yui Ishikawa and Natsuki Hanae (who voice 2B and 9S respectively) will reprise their roles in the anime.
The series will be produced by A-1 Pictures, the studio best known for Sword Art Online, and directed by Rouji Masuyama (Blend S, Gurren Lagann Parallel Works, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.) In an interview with Masuyama and Yoko Taro, Taro announced that the anime would be called Nier: Automata ver. 1.1a, and would feature some changes from the game’s original storyline.
“The anime title has the affix ‘Ver 1.1a’ because the title Nier: Automata was a story we created to be a game, so copying it as is wouldn’t make an interesting story for an anime,” Taro said in a behind-the-scenes video. “So I brought up the idea of changing things around.”
Originally released in 2017, Nier: Automata was well received from PlatinumGames and Square Enix. It’s commercial and critical success prompted the release of a mobile spin-off and a remaster of the original 2010 game as Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139….
