Reports have surfaced that Microsoft’s next gen console will have 6 times the graphical power of the current gen Xbox 360. The new systems will have a reported AMD radion HD 6670 and the previous console had a ATI radion 1900/1950. Looking at this from a numbers perspective this is major gains, however looking at this from a PC stand point its not to great. When the ATI radion 1950 was release it was a top of the line card the had a ton of power and amazing capability’s. The ATI 1950 at retail was minimum $300 for the card and that was why games on the 360 looked amazing is because its was a high-end card. In this generation of graphics cards, if you look at the card that is in the same category as the 1950 your looking at the AMD Radion HD 6970 witch is a $300 to $350 and Microsoft wants to put at AMD radion HD 6670 which is a $70 to $100; it’s kind of a joke because its a mid-range card that is made for playing game ok but not ultra graphic’s. On some games that have come out like Battlefield 3 the recommended was a 6950 or La noir was a 6850 and this could mean that in 4 or 5 year developer’s will have hard time to keep making games because of the graphical limitations could cost Microsoft a lot.
On the other hand there are some positives to this card, it opens up alot of possibility for developer like direct X 11 graphic’s, native 3D support, much higher resolutions and a much more power. The most important thing is going to be the new experiences we will have.
But all in all this is not fully set in stone, the developers are likely going to receive there development consoles in august with the final configuration, and in my opinion Microsoft might have put a bigger Video card if they want to continue to competing with Sony.
