We’ve talked about sexuality in video games quite a bit during our Gameitall.com Podcasts. One subject that was touch was that characters, while being appealing to look at, could still kick a lot of ass. This is true for Vanillaware, the makers of great action RPG’s including the PS2 classic Odin’s Sphere, latest game Dragon’s Crown. In their latest trailer; they singled out one of there main characters, the Sorceress, on her combat style and some of the magic techniques she can learn and use. The trailer shows some great gameplay, fluid animations, and shows that the Sorceress; while being a magic user, can hold her own in a one on one brawl. So why are people offended? It might have something do to with the look of the Sorceress herself; of which you can see in this mildly safe for work trailer.
Many people are criticizing her appearance as it is too sexually oriented with the features that have been drawn out, with some reports citing that that the character looks to be drawn by a 14 year old boy. However I’d like point out exhibit A (below) where all the characters are an exaggerated form of what the characters are.
As a fan of the Vanillaware games, I think Dragon’s Crown and it’s characters look amazing; our team is looking forward to the game’s release later this year for the PS3 and PSVita. Dragon’s Crown is a 2D side-scrolling brawler with Dungeon Crawler and RPG elements in it.
