The third title in Spike Chunsoft’s murder mystery series, Danganronpa, is currently in productions according to the developer. However it is still in very early stages of developments. “Until everything’s been written, there’s nothing that’s set,” Kodaka Kazutaka said in an interview. “So to answer your question, it’s still very early because the scenario isn’t written yet.”
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and its sequel, Goodbye Despair, both released last year are a closed door scenario game, in which players assume the role of a high-school student trapped in a school (or in the case of Goodbye Despair, an island) in which the only way to escape is to commit a murder, but only if you don’t get caught. Getting caught leads to your execution.
While the two games are very similar, the series has branched off into an Anime and a spin-off action adventure title Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls. Although it’s likely the 3rd title is going to follow suit with Trigger Happy Havoc and Goodbye Despair, fans have been vocal about wanting something different.
It’s pretty much split in the middle in Japan,” Kazutaka said. “Half of them want to continue with [a] small group and what happens within there, and the other half wants more of the bigger story.”
NIS, the publisher of the Danganronpa series in North America are ready to publish the game given the chance saying “We’d love to do it if we had the opportunity to.”
