During an announcement of a slate of new anime series in the line for Netflix, the streaming empire announced an unexpected surprise, a new 3D CGI anime based on Capcom’s Action-RPG – Dragon’s Dogma.
The anime is being developed by Sublimation Inc., who specialize in 3D animation. This will be the studio’s first original project.
“Sublimation team has long dreamt of working on our own title.” Said Sublimation Inc.’s Representative Director, Atsushi Koishikawa. “We have oftentimes worked with partner studios to create partial CGI portions within a given title, so we feel very fortunate to work with Netflix through this production line deal. We’re excited to bring our unique cel shaded animation that carries hand-drawn textures to anime fans around the world.”
Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma was originally released in 2012, and was directed by Devil May Cry series lead Hideaki Itsuno. The game saw an expansion under the name Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, and multiple ports across the PC, PS4, Xbox One and coming to the Switch this April.
The game tells the story of a man who seeks revenge on a dragon who stole his heart and brought back to life as an Arisen. According to the official anime synopsis, it seems Sublimation Inc. will be following this part of the story closely.
Of course, this isn’t the only anime that Netflix will be producing. The press release also announces an anime spin-off of their dark sci-fi series, Altered Carbon, being developed by anima Inc. Other titles included SPRIGGAN which is based on the manga series of the same name, Production I.G.’s Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, WIT STUDIO’S Vampire in the Garden, and Bone’s Super Crooks – based on the comic book written by Mark Millar.
“Netflix aims to be the most compelling and attractive home for anime fans, creators and production studios.” said Netflix Director of Content (Japan), John Derderian. “We are creating an environment where production houses can do their best work, and deliver their shows on a service where we connect anime fans from over 190 countries to content they love”
There is no release date for the anime to Dragon’s Dogma at this time.
