Minecraft Story Mode: Episode – 3 kicks off right where we left off at the end of episode 2. We just had our butts owned like a pack noobs with a slow potion. This is all due to one of our comrades being a tad bit under the weather otherwise… Ivor would have got wrecked!
This episode kicks off at a much better pacing. I felt excited to dive back into the world of Minecraft. As my fiance put it, “man i really wanna play Minecraft now”. That is what i wanted from Minecraft Story mode, if it doesn’t make me want to play Minecraft i think its missing the Mark. The walking dead games did this as well they made me finally cave in and try out the show. If anything these games should pay homage, tribute, and as advertisement for their properties.
This episode succeeds in reusing mechanics that worked successfully in episode 1 and some from episode 2. My favorite of which was the Fun interactive intro to the game. It reminds me greatly of the intro’s to borderlands and although i did not play tales from borderlands i’m sure telltale seems to have learned how to implement some of the “fun” from that series into a sub-genre.
As always i do not want to dive deep into spoiler territory and I am also not going to go into a play by play of everything that happened. However this is the best episode to come out of the series thus far. It would appear either Telltale learned from their mistakes quickly in episode II and stuck to the formula that worked so well in episode I and improved it in every way. This episode also provided some dialogue options i feel may actually weigh in on how the series progresses *spoilers someone is getting canned* The game runs about 2 hours and has some solid fun moments.
My only Gripe with the series is it really lacks “gameplay” it often feels like a on rails quick-time game with timed dialogue options. For example “the ender puzzle” wasn’t a puzzle at all they straight up hand you the answer. it would have been great to observe the enderman, to look for clues. The switch puzzle before it is equally disappointing, if this game is targeted to kids please step it up. Kids are not stupid, when I was a kid games didn’t pander or hold our hands. I’m not asking Silent hill 1 puzzles of extreme vagueness here. but maybe step it up from a 1 out of 10 on the difficulty to a 3 out of 10?
Small Issue however on a game that is basically a 2 hour Minecraft tribute film. Step in the right direction! Also comes included with surprise ending that kind of made me LOL from some hilariously bad dialogue.
